Curare la verticalizzazione del tratto cervicale o il collo ‘raddrizzato’ con l’Osteopatia

Una lordosi cervicale normale assomiglia ad un’ampia C, a concavità posteriore. Spesso, ci si confronta con pazienti che presentano un tratto cervicale verticalizzato (o rettilineizzato) e, delle volte, addirittura invertito (cifosi cervicale), a causa di uno strain-sprain della regione del collo.
La verticalizzazione (o perdita della curvatura fisiologica) del tratto cervicale può essere dovuta a diversi fattori: può essere una condizione ereditaria; può essere causata da lesioni e/o trauma esterni (p.es. colpo di frusta) o da eccessiva tensione o contrazione dei muscoli del collo (interna).
Anche obesità e osteoporosi (quest’ultima spesso presente nel tratto cervicale) sono stati identificati come una delle possibili cause di cambiamenti nella curvatura del collo. L’obesità influisce sul baricentro e sull’equilibrio della struttura fisica, creando un sovraccarico e una tensione in più, che il corpo deve gestire attraverso la distribuzione delle forze, per sostenere e mantenere una postura eretta.
Tuttavia, nella maggior parte dei casi, i problemi sono relazionati ad una postura scorretta mantenuta nel tempo (per esempio dovuta ad un vecchio trauma, oppure da posizioni sbagliate al computer o sul letto), e la trascuranza dei primi segnali di fastidio.
Alcune posizioni del collo, protratte nel tempo, possono causare usura e instabilità delle vertebre e dei dischi intervertebrali e, di conseguenza, portare ad alterazioni della lordosi cervicale.
E’ molto frequente il mantenere una posizione di flessione del collo (in avanti), al lavoro o negli affari di casa, risultando in un’eccessiva tensione sulla parte anteriore del tratto cervicale, così che il nucleo polposo del disco viene premuto posteriormente. Questa posizione spesso si ripete molte volte al giorno, e può essere aggravata se si porta anche il mento in avanti.
Altre posizioni usuranti sono il mantenere per lungo tempo la testa piegata di lato (ad es., al telefono), oppure girata da una parte (ad es., per vedere lo schermo spostato da un lato) – di solito queste posizioni avvengono sempre allo stesso lato.
Quanto prima le variazioni delle curve cervicali vengono identificate, maggiori saranno le possibilità di trattamento e minori le eventualità di complicazioni. Il problema può essere diagnosticato da esami ad immagini (raggi X e RMN) e da un accurato esame fisico. I trattamenti osteopatici sono molto efficaci nel correggere l’assetto posturale e nel rinforzare la colonna vertebrale.

Dipendendo dalla gravità e dall’urgenza del caso, potrebbe essere finanche necessario eseguire un intervento chirurgico, anche se la chirurgia dovrebbe essere, generalmente, considerata come l’ultima risorsa, perché può essere rischiosa e può influire sullo stile di vita del paziente, portando cambiamenti anche permanenti.
Per esempio, l’intervento della fusione spinale, per correggere la curvatura cervicale, unisce saldamente due o più vertebre in modo che esse non possano scivolare e spostarsi. Questo intervento rende difficile, però, il movimento fisiologico di girare la testa, e le persone diventano anche più vulnerabili a lesioni, perché il tratto in questione perde parte della sua elasticità e flessibilità.
Alcune conseguenze della verticalizzazione cervicale
Un tratto cervicale ‘raddrizzato’ perde la sua capacità di assorbire gli urti. Questo crea un’ulteriore pressione sul disco intervertebrale e lo fa scompensare. Nel tempo, le singole vertebre tenderanno a collassare. In termine medico, questa situazione viene definita malattia degenerativa articolare, malattia degenerativa del disco o osteoartrite. Qui, la parola ‘malattia’ indica che il problema è di natura progressiva, a meno che qualcosa venga fatto per fermare o invertire il processo stesso.
L’osteoartrite o artrosi è una condizione molto dolorosa, che provoca rigidità, formicolio e intorpidimento. In alcuni individui può essere anche asintomatica, essi non si accorgono del problema fino a quando non diventa una situazione più seria. La diagnosi precoce è quindi fondamentale per evitare di dover arrivare alla sola terapia palliativa, di gestione del dolore o, peggio, un intervento chirurgico.
La mancanza di curvatura della colonna vertebrale cervicale provoca tensione sul midollo spinale e sulle arterie carotidi, che apportano ossigeno e nutrienti al cervello. Ciò può essere causa di sbandamenti e sindromi vertiginose, mal di testa, nausea, stanchezza, tinnito (acufeni), dolore, nervosismo, insonnia, pressione alta, confusione mentale, solo per citarne alcuni.
Inoltre, la rettilineizzazione del tratto cervicale può portare, in breve tempo, a un disallineamento totale di tutto la colonna vertebrale e non solo, portando dolore in distretti anche lontani, finanche agli organi interni, attraverso il sistema somato-viscerale.
